The bag question: buy for the day, not the fantasy

Capacity, structure and hardware decide whether a bag gets used or sits in a dust bag.

Start with the day you actually have

List what you carry: laptop, charger, water, umbrella, gym kit. Then measure the largest item. A bag that fits your imagination but not your laptop becomes a shelf object.

Internal dimensions matter more than the marketing name. A “large” tote can have a narrow base that refuses a 15-inch laptop.

Structure is a use case

Structured bags stand up, protect contents and look formal. Soft bags compress, travel well and forgive overpacking. Neither is better; they serve different days.

If you commute on a bike, a soft crossbody beats a rigid tote. If you carry documents, the opposite is true.

Hardware and weight

Chains and large clasps look good and add weight. Empty the bag and weigh it if the seller can. A 1.4 kg tote feels different after an hour.

Check the hardware finish in neutral light. Gold tones vary from yellow to champagne; matching jewellery is harder than it looks.

The resale myth

Resale value is not a reason to buy a bag you will not carry. Treat it as a bonus if it happens, not a plan.

Buy the shape that solves your week, then care for it: stuff it, dust bag it, and keep it away from heat.
